Robert Critchley lives in the Turtle Mountains area of Southwest Manitoba, Canada, close to Lake Metigoshe and the town of Deloraine. He is presently building a music production facility with tuned control room and ISO booth to open in the Spring of 2025 under the name Studio 450 . Rob brings ‘40 years plus’ of music creation, music production, music performance and coaching to his portfolio of services. Here is a comprehensive list of what he is offering at his home studio and his future facility under construction.
Custom Recording Production : Including producing, tracking, tuning, mixing and mastering music for indie artists. Coming soon; long distance internet recording via Sessionwire. Geographical location does not seperate you from collaborating with skilled musicians from other provinces, countries or continents. During Covid, Rob produced one of the earliest posted long distance music videos in honor of Health care workers. His 70's band re-union involved musicians and film editors from, BC, Utah, Ontario, Virgina, and North Carolina. * Sessionwire (developed by Canadians Robin Leboe and Brendan Lyons ) requires a good fibre internet plan and an intel or silicone Mac. Robert is well connected to skilled musicians, singers and performers and can prepare charts and co-ordinate sessions with connections he has forged over his music career.
Filmscore and Cues:
Robert has over a decade of experience writing for TV and film. He is able to write scores from huge orchestral tracks, to minimalist cues with vibey sound design elements. He also has vast experience writing genre specific cues that best suit a particular project (Epic hybrids, Rock, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Pop, Metal, Ambient, Synthwave, Country, Folk…). He also writes music specific to Documentaries or shows such as Crime, Discovery, Science and Fantasy. He is able to work well with others and help cinematographers and videographers tell their stories with the marriage of video and music. His software library of virtual instruments (Spitfire, Native Instruments, Universal Audio, Slate, Omnisphere, UJAM and Arcade and more) allows him to quickly create mock-ups and suggest direction into all of the ebbs and flows of a muti-media production. After sketching tracks for a clent he can record with session players and vocalists to really bring added realism and punch to the tracks.
Composing lessons and mentoring:
If you are looking to refine your songwriting skills or write your first tune, Rob can help you express your authentic self and put the pieces together for your original music. If TV and film sync music interests you, Rob can teach you how to zone in on a music breif, create a sound design “atmosphere” and learn the basics of writing in the computer based writing and recording environment. *there are some requirments in terms of equipment and software. Note that Rob's DAW of choice is the industry standard Logic 11 which runs on Mac Silicone.
There will be no shortage of inspiration in your creative endeavors. Be prepared to dive into the ever evolving world of virtual instruments, audio processing plugins (reverbs, compressors, FX, pitch correction) and mastering. It has become a deep sea of technology.
Vocal Coaching/Recording
Robert excels at recording vocals and “comp” vocal recording. Develop your skills as a performer, learn how to use a microphone, and gain an understanding of how to prepare to capture your best vocal performances in a studio environment.
Family Keepsake Recordings : Rob has had the pleasure over the years of recording family members seeking to do an EP of songs to remember loved ones and create shared and cherished experiences. This is not about “sounding professional”or capturing a pristine performance! It is about love and community and recording something that will outlive us and be enjoyed for future generations. It is for young and old and everyone in between!
